I hadn't wanted to leave our bed, but I didn't have a choice, we didn't have a choice. The tests were due to begin soon and being late would only piss off the council even more. We were all ready and prepared and I was feeling good about everything that was going to happen today, even if the council was being prejudiced toward my generals. I knew my guys could handle whatever was thrown at them.

It all changed when we arrived though. Arianwen and our mother were waiting outside the arena, talking quietly. I hadn't even seen my mother since I'd been back in Avalon and seeing her now it was obvious why. Her face darkened when her eyes focused on me and my generals. She pulled herself up to her full height and looked down her nose at me as I approached.

"Mother, it's good to see that you are well," I said, dipping my head to show her the respect she deserved, or at least expected.

"Rhoswen." My name had never sounded more like an insult than it did coming from her mouth in that moment.

"Mother and I were just discussing post-Hunt plans. Once I'm on the council I will be able to pull some strings and get her raised to the status she deserves," Ari said, sounding more than a little smug about the situation.

"I'm sure you will be able to find me something excellent, my dear," my mother said as she patted Ari on the shoulder. "You picked fine, upstanding generals."

The last part was a comment to me, I was sure. My mother was the queen of passive aggressive remarks.

"Well, it wasn't hard to pick generals that weren't beasts," Ari said before clicking her tongue at me.

"My men aren't beasts. They are powerful, strong, smart, capable, and better in every way than your generals could even hope to be. Yes, they are more than human, but why would I want a team of just humans when I could have a vampire, shifter, and mage as well? Besides, it makes sex so much more fun, just imagine what they can do, whereas you have to hold back for fear of hurting yours, that can't be very satisfying." I fake pouted at the end and my mother sniffed at me in disdain while someone, probably Remi or Connall, made a choking sound behind me.

"That wildness is precisely what you were supposed to avoid. Having human generals teaches you restraint." My mother chimed in, letting her disappointment ring in her voice.

"Maybe that's what's wrong with our society, we are open and free in so many ways but then restrict ourselves in others, and if we fail or choose not to follow convention we are shunned and looked down on, even though it makes no sense!"

"Why do you always have to try and change our society? It's good the way it is! Our culture is ancient and majestic and our traditions are borne out of experience and sacrifice. Why do you not appreciate it?" Ari demanded, her voice getting higher in pitch and volume as she spoke.
